IN THE MIDDLE THE NIGHT
With Special Guest Jane L. Powell and the late Charlie Byrd
This project began one day last Spring when I was working with Tom Ohmsen, owner and sound engineer of Flat 5 Press in Salem VA, on one of my songs, “A Little Healing.” Tom said, “Why don’t you get Jane Powell to sing that one, she’d really sound great on it!” So, I tentatively made the call, more than a little nervous of what she might say; she already had a wonderful career as a world renowned jazz and blues vocalist and recording artist, and I’d no idea if she would take to the idea of coming and working on my song. Little did I know what a generous, kind, and spiritual person Jane is she said, “sure, I’ll come sing your song,” and that was that! “A Little Healing” came out so well, we decided to collaborate on several other songs. We co-wrote another tune, “Love Bug,” and before we both knew it, we had the makings of an entire CD! Just for good measure, we brought in Charlie Byrd (he makes a cameo appearance on a beautiful guitar solo on Night Time, one of his last recordings), David “Fathead” Newman (Ray Charles’ tenor sax man, he appears on “Going to the City), Brian Lynch ( trumpet, played in Phil Woods Quintet and Eddie Palmieri Band, and as leader of his own group), Chip McNeill (sax player for Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, and many others), Ray Codrington (doubling on trumpet, flugel horn, and congos/percussion) and other outstanding musicians. We are very honored to present Jane Powell singing with our trio!
