It’s hard to believe that this new CD, “Jazz Time,” is Lenny Marcus’ 7th release. It seems like it was just yesterday that he cut his first album in New Orleans while studying with the legendary Ellis Marsalis. The talented jazz pianist, composer, vocalist and flutist continues to evolve as one of the most accessible of today’s players and brings forth fresh and exciting sounds that will surely please a large audience. On this release, Lenny continues his pattern of mixing his own highly enjoyable original compositions with a variety of styles from a number of musical genres for a soulful mix of very listenable tunes. Joining Lenny on this outing is the legendary saxophonist and flutist, David “Fathead” Newman, and Roanoke Virginia native and talented vocalist Jane L. Powell whose soulful approach to her performances perfectly compliments Lenny’s own style of playing and composing that are deep rooted in the blues. Also, popular trumpeter and fluglehornist Ray Coderington performs on a number of selections, along with Lenny’s long-time rhythm section of Peter Ingram on drums and either Bob Bowen or John Brown on bass. Lenny gives us unique and fresh arrangements of the theme from “Exodus,” Ray Bryant’s swinging “Threesome,” Mose Allison’s “Going to the City” and “Ask Me Nice.” One of the instrumental highlights of the album is a clever arrangement of the theme from “Mission Impossible” that he turns into his own thing titled “Impossible Mission.” Add to these tunes Lenny’s juicy, poignant and highly personal originals, and you have another winner of a CD. "In the end, what makes Lenny Marcus’ music so special is that it is written and performed as a true expression of his own feelings, coming out in a way that freely communicates itself to everyone listening. You don’t have to struggle with or heavily concentrate on Lenny’s music all you have to do is just kick back and enjoy it!" TO PURCHASE: "Jazz Time" CD |
